Operation management also known as production is the process of combining and transforming several resources employed during the production process by companies into value added products and services in a controlled manner in line with the firm’s policies.

 

Course Description:


This course is aimed at exposing the students to the details of operations management, with origin traceable to 5000 before Christ (B.C). The origin of operation management was actually possible thanks to the Sumerians, who tracked inventories, transactions, and taxes. Later, initial operations of course were used by the Romans to plan and build projects, such as the pyramids.  Since then till now, operations management has remained key in business management.

 

Learning Objectives:


At the end of the course students should be able to:

  1. Explain the term operations management with the ability to discussing the role of the operation manager’s in a manufacturing company.
  2. Describe the decisions and activities of the operations manager in supervising the production process in a manufacturing company.
  3. Explain how to create and use both PERT and Gantt charts.
  4. Discuss how manufacturing firms use technology to achieve efficiency in goods production and delivery.
  5. Define the decisions taken during the planning process of product delivery in a service company.
  6. Outline the features differentiating service operations from manufacturing operations with identification of the activities undertaken to manage operations in a service organization.
  7. Describe how similar manufacturing and service companies use total quality management and outsourcing to provide value to customers
